Defined as a non-material substrate, theoretically responsible for maintaining the physiological homeostasis and health.⁶

THE DEFENCE MECHANISM

Is a physical and psychological complexity having the simple goal of preserving life as best as possible.⁸

Homeopathic philosophy considers a dystonic vital force as the primary cause of disease.⁹

All living organisms produce measurable electric currents and potentials.

Bioelectricity is a critical biologic component in nervous system activity, and many other vital biological processes all of which are inter-dependent and influenced by emotion, cognition, and psychosocial factors - suggesting that the subtle, low-energy biofield connects and controls these activities and interactions within an organism.¹⁰

Devices which measure biofield properties, the electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG), are widely used in clinical settings.

For research in a controversial field such as homeopathy, EEG as an outcome measure enables utilization of more objective and sensitive tools to detect effects.¹¹¹²

A Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) measuring Homeopathy and the Biofield in FIBROMYALGIA

showed evidence of sensitizability in pain pathways and EEG alterations.

Bell et al., 2004¹³ (published in Rheumatology) this RCT with crossover found significant results for tender point pain; quality of life; trend toward less depression in the homeopathic group with significant EEG increases, and decreases in the placebo group at three and six months.¹⁴

Homeopathic pathogenetic trials (provings)

usually rely on symptom self report measures, it has been suggested that adding objective biomarkers could enhance detection of subtle initial remedy effects.

This double blind feasibility study examined the EEG effects of repeated olfactory administration of two polycrest remedies Sulphur or Pulsatilla (based on symptom similarity scores on the Homeopathic Constitutional Type Questionnaire.)

‘EEG alpha offers an objective biomarker of remedy effects for future studies and potential method for distinguishing time-dependent effects of specific remedies and remedy potencies from one another.’¹⁶

Slow Wave Sleep EEG

in Young Adults with Histories of Coffee-Induced Insomnia

The homeopathic medicines Coffea cruda and Nux vomica in 30c potencies alter short-term nonlinear dynamic parameters of slow wave sleep EEG in healthy young adults.

Multiscale entropy is suggested to provide a more sensitive nonlinear dynamical systems analytic method than Mekler-D2 for evaluating homeopathic remedy effects on human sleep EEG patterns.¹⁷

Multiweek resting EEG cordance change patterns

Findings suggest administration of homeopathic remedies can change the resting EEG cordance response across all frequency bands (δ, θ, α, and ß).

The ß-frequency band showed particularly robust oscillatory pattern. Remedy-type effects interact with time to produce significant differences that imply a nonlinear variability in the changes over several weeks. ¹⁸

(This data extended the research team's prior FIBROMYALGIA findings that early changes in EEG cordance were able to distinguish subsequent verum responders to homeopathy from verum non-responders, and from patients who received placebo.¹⁹)

Environmental chemical intolerance

Homeopaths report that individuals with heightened self-reported environmental chemical intolerance (CI) exhibit increased reactivity to homeopathic remedies.

Individuals with high CI showed greater variability over time in remedy EEG alpha effects than did those low CI suggesting that CI (with an underlying susceptibility to time-dependent sensitization and oscillatory responses) could contribute to nonlinear dose-response patterns and inconsistent reproducibility of homeopathic clinical care and research.²⁰
