As a novice homeopath, I literally spent hours (if not days) searching out rubrics because I wanted to get better, faster and more accurate with my repertory work.
I knew the only way to become a successful homeopath was to practice: I had to get practicing as often as I could, everyday!
So, I searched out and am ever grateful to The amazing power of Homeopathy – a record of 201 difficult cases1 which kept me practicing everyday as I established myself as a homeopath.
Fifteen years’ of encouraging novice homeopath’s crossing my path to get practicing in any way they can led me, during 2024, to self-published a textbook One Hundred Practice Cases for Homeopaths – Solving for humans and animals.
One Hundred Practice Cases for Homeopaths2 offers succinct real-world adult, child, and animal scenarios to provide additional and practical experience in solving cases through rubric identification and selection, and materia medica study.
Homeopaths of varied experience and education tested these cases for solvability and alongside Dr. Frederik Schroyens, two highly respected teachers of homeopathy Patricia Hatherley and Dr. Seema Mahesh kindly provided reviews.
Fellow Substacker and homeopath Chelsea Smock3 had this to say;
‘‘In this little book, Sarah has collected cases for us to practice one of the critical skills of the homeopath: translating the situation in front of us into the language of homeopathy — rubrics.
The cases are elegantly summarized, giving us insight into key questions to ask when taking a case. The rubrics she chooses allow us to hone our own repertorization skills and deepen our understanding of a range of remedies.
Overall, an invaluable tool for learning homeopathy!’’
In the book’s introduction, I state that if you are a homeopath - novice or no - you know that it is crucial you practice, everyday – as this is the only way you will become a confident and proficient prescriber.
I have designed One Hundred Practice Cases for Homeopaths with you in mind, to fill-in during a pause in your real-life cases.
Studying and solving these as if they are your own will cement your already vast homeopathic knowledge through practicing.
The much valued proceeds from book sales go towards my Masters of Applied Health Science intended aim of obtaining crucial contemporaneous data of CAM use within the New Zealand population - in time for the writing of the natural medicine bill beginning 2026. Wish me luck..!
And, I would so appreciate - if you are in a position to do so - sharing the existence of this textbook with colleagues, students, associates, faculty etc., as being one of the targets of googles 2017 ‘medic update’ (before shadow-banned was a word) I always struggle to get any words out there, any where! I am grateful to you for your support.
‘‘Sarah Penrose is a meticulous prescriber, who is wholly committed to her clients, colleagues, students, and to the practice of classical homeopathy.
Her book is a gift for us to become better prescribers.
In this fast-paced world we are becoming so accustomed to shortcuts.
But there are no shortcuts in classical homeopathy.
We don’t use protocols and we don’t give ‘this for that’.
Yes, it’s wonderful to get a keynote case, or have a person display the purest essence of the remedy and essentially summarise the materia medica as they relay their symptoms…
However, most prescriptions are made on totality, and we must do the repertorization work to effectively prescribe.
In the end, hard work pays off, and it remains a labour of love.
If we keep practicing and learning, we will become proficient in one of the most profound of the healing sciences.’’

Sarah! Thank you so much for the mention, and I will double down here on my praise for this book.
I mentioned it to colleagues in my homeopathy mastermind, and we all got a copy so that we could work through the cases together. What a fantastic exercise. It is one of our favorite ways to learn together, as it provokes discussion and deeper understanding of both the art of repertorization, and the materia medica!
Thank you so much for sharing your work in the world.
